Flat-Plate Carrier Tape Forming: Guide to Intermittent Forming Technology

Flat-plate forming is the method to choose when the pocket, not the metre, is the hard part. A flat-plate machine closes a heated mould onto the sheet, holds it for a defined dwell time under vacuum and pressure, and releases it once the polymer has cooled enough to keep its shape. That dwell is what makes deep cavities, wide tape and tight tolerance combinations achievable on a production basis.

How flat-plate forming works

The sheet is pre-heated to the forming window of the material, indexed into the mould, formed by vacuum draw plus plug assist where required, then held against the cooled mould surface. Because forming and cooling are separated in time rather than in space, pocket depth and wall thickness can be controlled independently of line speed — the finished tape is not rushed through the tool.

Punching is either a separate station or, on integrated platforms, part of the same cycle. Integrating both operations inside one mould means the sprocket holes and the pockets are produced from the same datum, which removes one source of positional error. The trade-off is tooling complexity: an integrated die has to do two jobs at once and must be designed for both. See the JYT-P-008 integrated platform.

Where flat-plate wins

Deep pockets. Cavities up to 25 mm deep need forming time that continuous rotary tools struggle to provide. Wide tape. Widths up to 120 mm, with partial 8 mm 1-to-2 capability on precision models. Non-standard geometry. Asymmetric or multi-level pockets are a tooling design problem first, and flat-plate gives the tooling more control. Tolerant critical dimensions. When pocket position relative to sprocket holes is the acceptance criterion, the closed-mould approach is easier to hold and easier to document.

Accuracy, stability and wear

Positioning accuracy comes from the feed system; long-run stability comes from the frame. Our precision platforms use magnetic-levitation linear feeding with servo control for ±0.002 mm repeat positioning, and locate the heating, forming and punching modules with guide pins and bushings so the upper and lower halves close on a single axis. Without that constraint, lateral drift shows up as uneven pocket depth and premature die wear — the two complaints that most often force a machine to be re-tooled early.

Choosing between flat-plate models

Start with the tape: width, pocket depth, material and the accuracy standard you must document. Then look at output and changeover frequency. A wide, deep pocket at moderate volume usually points to the JYT-P-003 or JYT-P-006; narrow tape with extreme positional accuracy points to the JYT-P-006 or JYT-P-008; general-purpose production with a varied product mix sits comfortably on the JYT-P-001 or JYT-P-002.
