Carrier Tape Inspection and Testing: What to Measure and How

Zhengzhou Jinyingteng

Carrier tape is a consumable that fails silently. Nothing breaks when a pocket is 0.03 mm deep, or when cumulative pitch drifts across a reel; the line simply starts rejecting at a slightly higher rate, or a feeder mis-indexes once every few thousand placements. Inspection is the only way to see those failures before the customer does. This page sets out the measurements that matter, the methods used to take them, and the sampling plan that turns measurements into evidence.

Vision inspection in production

Vision is the only method that can check every pocket at production speed, and it is the difference between sampling and process control. A production AOI station typically checks pocket geometry, hole presence and position, pocket position relative to holes, and gross surface defects, and it flags or marks the reel when a limit is exceeded. Details of how that station is configured are on the AOI system page.

Vision does not replace dimensional audit. A camera measures what it is calibrated to measure, so the calibration artefact and the measurement programme need periodic verification against a traceable reference. The practical arrangement is vision for 100 percent screening and a bench audit at defined intervals for the characteristics vision handles poorly, such as burr height and camber.

Peel force and the customer’s feeder

Peel force is measured on the finished tape with cover tape applied, at a defined angle and speed, because both variables change the result. A tape that measures well in the laboratory can still fail on a feeder that peels at a different angle. Where a customer reports intermittent pick-up failures, the useful data is the peel force curve along the reel, not a single average value, since a local spike is what stops the feeder. The peel strength tester page covers the measurement setup.

Sampling that produces usable evidence

Measurement without a sampling rule produces opinions. Our default plan has three layers:

  • Start-up. First-article check of every critical dimension after each tooling change, material change or die sharpening, recorded against the drawing.
  • In-process. Defined intervals through each reel for the characteristics that drift first — pitch, pocket depth and burr.
  • End of reel and end of lot. Confirmation that drift has not accumulated, plus a retained sample.

For customers who require capability data, we run a study on their material and report CPK for the agreed critical characteristics. This is the point where inspection stops being a quality gate and becomes a claim about the process, and it should be agreed in writing before the first production run.

Tolerances to test against

Test limits should come from a standard plus the customer’s own additions, not from whatever the machine happens to hold. The EIA-481 tolerances page summarises the clauses that apply to pitch, hole size and pocket clearance, and the EIA-481-D article covers the reasoning behind them. Where a customer adds a tighter limit, that limit becomes the acceptance criterion for the first article.

Our own process documentation and audit records are described on the quality assurance page. If you need a measurement protocol written for a specific tape, or a capability study on your material, send the drawing and the critical characteristics to our team.
