On an SMT line the carrier tape is the transport medium for every component. A feeder indexes the tape by its sprocket holes, presents the pocket at the pickup point and peels the cover tape at a fixed rate. When the tape is good, none of this is visible. When it is marginal, the symptoms appear as pickup errors, dropped components and line stops that are blamed on the placement machine.
How tape quality shows up on the line
Pitch error. Cumulative sprocket-hole error moves the pocket away from the pickup point. EIA-481 limits cumulative error to ±0.2 mm across any ten consecutive holes; beyond that, placement offsets and feeder alarms follow.
Pocket dimension drift. A pocket that is too shallow lets the component sit proud and the cover tape drag on it. A pocket that is too loose lets the component rotate or shift, which shows up as angular placement error.
Burrs at holes and pocket edges. A burr at a sprocket hole changes the effective pitch and wears the feeder index pin; a burr inside a pocket can block component removal.
Cover tape peel behaviour. Peel force that varies along the reel causes feeder stalls. It is influenced by tape surface condition as much as by the cover tape itself, which is why peel testing belongs in production, not only in a lab.
Who produces SMT carrier tape
Three groups buy forming equipment: component manufacturers making tape for their own parts, independent tape converters supplying the merchant market, and EMS/ODM plants producing tape for internal use or for customers with unusual component shapes. Their equipment priorities differ — the first needs documented capability, the second needs cost per metre, the third needs changeover speed.
Specifying equipment for SMT tape
Feeding accuracy. If the tape must certify EIA-481 pitch, the feed system is the first specification to check — ±0.002 mm repeat positioning on our precision platforms is what keeps cumulative error inside the window.
Punching rigidity. Die clearance, punch sharpness and frame stiffness decide burr height. Guide-pin and bushing location on the punching module reduces lateral drift over a shift.
Width range and lane count. SMT tape runs from 8 mm upwards; if your mix includes wide tape for connectors, choose a platform that covers it without re-tooling every change.
Inspection. An AOI station and a peel strength tester behind the forming line turn a defect from a customer complaint into a production data point.
Start with the defect, not the machine
If your line is already stopping, the fastest route is to identify which failure mode is present and work back. Our troubleshooting guide and the analysis of the cost of minor tape defects are written for that exercise.
