Carrier Tape for LED Packaging

Zhengzhou Jinyingteng

LED packaging is a volume business with a precision problem. Packages keep getting smaller while output keeps rising, so tape has to be produced fast, with pockets that are shallow but exact, on material that will not damage an ESD-sensitive part. The application sits between commodity SMT tape and fine-pitch semiconductor tape, and the equipment choice reflects that.

What LED tape demands

Small, consistent pockets. LED packages are typically compact, so pocket dimensions are small and the acceptable variation is proportionally tight. Pocket depth control matters because the lens or dome of the package is often the tallest feature.

Anti-static material. Many LED customers specify anti-static or conductive PS. The additive changes the forming behaviour slightly, so temperature and cooling must be set for that grade rather than for plain PS.

High output per shift. LED volumes are large and the tape geometry is stable, which is exactly the profile that suits roller-type and multi-lane forming rather than frequent tooling changes.

Clean pocket surfaces. Optical inspection of LEDs is sensitive to contamination inside the pocket. Forming conditions that cause material sticking or flaking create a quality problem that looks like a handling problem.

Material selection for LED tape

PS is the workhorse for LED tape: good formability, predictable behaviour at moderate temperatures and a cost structure that suits high volume. PC is used where pocket strength or clarity is needed, and PET appears where stiffness and thermal resistance matter. The trade-offs are set out in our carrier tape materials guide, with dedicated pages for PS and PC.

Equipment for LED tape production

For stable geometry and high volume, the 1-to-6 roller-type embossing machine is the efficient route: multiple lanes formed per pass from one sheet. For shallow pockets that still need tight position control, a flat-plate platform gives more control over the forming cycle and is easier to re-tool when a new package appears.

Whichever platform is used, the downstream chain should match the output: slitting and rewinding to finished width, AOI inspection for pocket and hole quality, and a peel strength tester for cover tape consistency.

Common LED tape problems

Pocket depth drift shows up as pick-up hesitation or a component sitting proud under the cover tape. Pitch error shows up as placement offset that grows along the reel. Both are forming and feeding issues rather than cover tape issues, and both are diagnosable — see common forming defects and the LED packaging trends article.

Specifying LED tape equipment

Send the package outline drawing, the material grade including ESD requirement, the target metres per hour and the lane count you want to run. We will confirm the tooling approach and whether the geometry is better produced flat-plate or rotary — contact us.
