The exceptions are where the money is made or lost — a 4 mm tape for a tiny optical part, an 88 mm wide tape for a connector tray replacement, three lanes running at once, or a line that has to sit inside an existing footprint and hand finished reels to an existing packer. This page explains what is realistically customisable, how a custom project is run, and where custom projects usually go wrong.

The five things that actually get customised

Layer

Typical request

What it changes

Tooling

New pocket geometry, unusual pitch, non-standard sprocket pattern

Die design, forming mould, first-article test

Tape handling

Very narrow or very wide tape, thin gauge material

Tension control, guide rollers, rewind geometry

Throughput

Extra lanes, higher line speed, larger reel capacity

Frame size, drive sizing, cooling length

Process add-ons

In-line AOI, pre-drying, cover tape lamination, slitting

Station order, footprint, controls integration

Automation

Recipe management, data logging, MES handshaking, auto splice

PLC and HMI scope, documentation

What is usually not worth customising

Custom does not mean everything is negotiable. The forming principle — flat-plate or roller — should follow the tape and the volume, not a preference. The control platform is best kept standard because spares, service and operator familiarity all depend on it. Similarly, safety guarding, pneumatic layout and the general frame architecture are better left at the standard design; re-engineering them adds cost without adding capability.

A useful filter is to ask whether the customisation changes what the tape can do, or only how the machine is arranged. The first category justifies engineering; the second is often solved by a standard option.

How a custom project runs

We run custom work in six stages, and each stage ends with something the customer can check:

Requirement brief. Tape drawings, material, annual and peak volume, floor space, utilities, existing equipment to integrate with, and the acceptance criteria the customer will apply.

Concept and layout. Proposed station order, footprint, lane arrangement and controls scope, with the assumptions written down.

Tooling design. Die and forming mould design reviewed against the pocket drawing, including the tolerance stack-up.

Sample tape. Trial reels produced on the customer’s material where available, measured against the acceptance criteria.

Factory acceptance test. A written FAT protocol run in our workshop, with dimensional records and a signed result.

Installation and handover. Commissioning on site, operator training, spare parts list and maintenance schedule.

Stage four is the one that matters most. A sample reel produced on the customer’s own material, measured with the customer’s own acceptance criteria, removes almost all of the risk from the remaining stages. If a project skips it, the factory acceptance test becomes the first real test, which is the expensive place to find a problem.

Writing acceptance criteria before the quote

Custom projects fail on paperwork more often than on engineering. Three clauses prevent most of it. First, state which dimensions are critical and which are nominal, with the measurement method for each. Second, state the material grades the machine must handle, since a machine qualified on PS is not automatically qualified on PC. Third, state the performance metric — reels per hour at a defined pocket depth, or first-pass yield — rather than “high speed”.

Cái inspection and testing page lists the measurements we normally propose as acceptance criteria, and the EIA-481 tolerances page covers the standard clauses those criteria usually reference.

Project examples and realistic scope

Custom work in practice usually sits inside one of three envelopes: a new tape geometry on an existing platform, an extra lane or station on a standard frame, or a full line with forming, punching, inspection, slitting and rewinding integrated. The projects page shows how these have been delivered, including a custom forming solution for an automotive electronics manufacturer and a high-speed line for an SMT factory.

If you are at the stage of deciding whether standard equipment can be adapted, the most efficient step is a short requirement review: send the tape drawing, the volume and the constraint that is blocking a standard machine. We will tell you whether it needs engineering or an option.
