Product Introduction: Peel Strength Tester for Carrier Tape
Ensuring Reliable Cover Tape Seal Performance for SMT Manufacturing
Overview
The Peel Strength Tester for Carrier Tape is a specialized quality control instrument designed to measure the adhesion force between the cover tape and the carrier tape in embossed carrier tape packaging . This measurement—commonly referred to as peel force or peel strength—is a critical quality parameter that determines whether carrier tape will perform reliably on automated SMT pick-and-place lines.
During SMT assembly, the cover tape must peel away cleanly and consistently to allow component pickup. If the peel force is too high, the tape may tear or cause feeder jams; if too low, the cover tape may detach prematurely during shipping, exposing components to contamination or damage. This tester helps manufacturers verify that packaging parameters are within specification before components are shipped to customers .
Key Function
The instrument performs a peel test by clamping the carrier tape and cover tape separately, then pulling them apart at a controlled speed and angle (typically 165–180 degrees) to measure the force required for separation . The test results—including maximum peel force, minimum peel force, and average peel force—help operators:
- Validate sealing process parameters — Ensure heat-sealing temperature, pressure, and time are correctly set
- Maintain SMT compatibility — Verify that peel force meets EIA-418 and IEC 60286-3 standards
- Prevent field failures — Catch peel force deviations before finished reels are shipped to customers
- Support quality documentation — Generate data for CPK analysis and quality records
Typical Applications
- Carrier tape manufacturing — In-process quality control and final inspection
- SMT kitting operations — Verification of incoming material quality
- Packaging development — Optimizing cover tape and sealing parameters
- Supplier quality assurance — Standardized testing for incoming materials
